In May 2021, output in services rose slightly (+0.2%) Index of services production - May 2021
In May 2021, output in services recovered slightly (+0.2% after −1.8% in April). Compared with February 2020 (last month before the start of the first lockdown), it remained sharply down (−7.7%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In May 2021, output in services recovered slightly (+0.2% after −1.8% in April). Compared with February 2020 (last month before the start of the first lockdown), it remained sharply down (−7.7%).
In May 2021, contrasted evolutions depending on the sectors
In May 2021, output bounced back sharply in accommodation and food services activities (+45.7% after –10.8%). In accommodation (+51.6% after – 23.5% in April), the rebound was the result of the lifting of the lockdown, which in April had limited travel possibilities. Food and beverage service activities (+44.4% after –7.7% in April) benefited from the reopening of the terraces from 19 May. Output fell sharply in professional, scientific and technical activities (–4.5% after –0.3%), in information-communication (–5.1% after +1.5%), and more moderately in transportation and storage (–1.0% after –2.3%). It rebounded in real estate activities (+7.0% after –1.3%) and in arts, entertainment and recreation (+9.5% after –23.9%), with the reopening of some activities in this sector after more than six months of closure. Output was almost steady in administrative and support services activities (+0.1% after –1.1%).
Output in services was still significantly lower (–7.7%) than in February 2020, with a collapse in accommodation and food services activities (–42.4%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (–54.1%). The decline from February 2020 was more moderate in transportation and storage (–7.2% overall but –47.7% in air transport), administrative and support services activities (–5.6%), and real estate activities (–1.2%). On the other hand, the information-communication (+5.7%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+0.4%) sectors were above their February 2020 level.
