Total consumption of goods

  • Source: INSEE

Manufactured goods : +2.7 %

In June, manufactured goods consumption increased again (+2.7% after +26.1% in May). This increase was driven by spending on textile-clothing (+5.5%) and other manufactured goods (+3.2%), and to a lesser extent by durable goods purchases (+1.4%).

Over the second quarter, manufactured goods consumption fell anew (–4.7% after +0.3% in the first quarter).

Durables : +1.4 %

In June, durables goods spending increased again (+1.4% after +10.9%). This increase was due to the other durables purchases (+15.2%), particularly watches and jewelry, which had only partially rebounded in May when stores reopened. Transport equipment purchases increased slightly (+0.4% after +2.2% in May), and still remain significantly down from their pre-crisis level (–10.3% compared to Q4 2019). In contrast, housing equipment purchases declined slightly (–1.6%) after the strong rebound in May (+23.7%), but remain well above their pre-crisis level.

Over the second quarter, durable goods purchases fell (–5.1%, after +0.3% in the first quarter).

Textile-clothing: : +5.5 %

In June, textile-clothing spending increased again (+5.5%). After the very strong rebound in sales in May when stores reopened, spending remained at a high level in June (+5.7% compared to Q4 2019).

Over the second quarter, textile-clothing consumption fell sharply (–7.0% after +2.2% in the first quarter).

Other manufactured goods : +3.2 %

In June, consumption of other manufactured goods increased again (+3.2% after +15.5%), due to very dynamic sporting goods sales. On the other hand, purchases of perfume and hygiene articles remained at a lower level than before the crisis.

Over the second quarter, spending on "other manufactured goods" fell sharply (–2.6% after –0.7% in the first quarter).
