In May 2021, turnover decreased again in manufacturing industry (−3.7%) Turnover in industry and construction - May 2021
In May 2021, turnover decreased again in the manufacturing industry (−3.7% after −3.9%) as in industry as a whole (−1.8% after −3.6%).
Export turnover again fell back in May (−8.3% after −2.9%).
Compared to February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), turnover decreased sharply in the manufacturing industry (−7.2%) and more moderatly in the whole industry (−2.8%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In May, turnover in the manufacturing industry declined especially in the manufacture of transport equipment
In May, turnover decreased sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (−22.1% after +17.5%), due to a further fall in the “other transport equipment“ (−31.1% after −28.9%) and in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−12.5% after −0.3%). The turnover decreased more moderatly in “other manufacturing” (−1.1% after +0.1%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−0.5% after −1.7%) and in the manufacture of coke refined petroleum products (−0.7% after −5.5%). The turnover increased in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.7% after −2.2%).
Compared to February 2020, turnover collapsed in the manufacture of transport equipment (−40.7%), and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−18.2%). Conversely, turnover increased moderatly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.5%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.8%) and in “other manufacturing” (+2.0%). Compared to February 2020, turnover increased sharply in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+17.8%).
