Output in services went down in April 2021 (−2.3%) Index of services production - April 2021
In April 2021, output in services fell back (−2.3% after +3.2% in March). Compared with February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), it remained sharply down (−8.0%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity since the outbreak of the health crisis, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of services production change is based mostly on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In April 2021, output in services fell back (−2.3% after +3.2% in March). Compared with February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), it remained sharply down (−8.0%).
In April 2021, output was down in a majority of sectors
In April 2021, due to the third lockdown and restrictions on activity and travel, output fell back drastically in arts, entertainment and recreation (-21.8% after +15.7%) and accommodation and food services activities (-10.1% after +0.1%), with a significant fall in accommodation (-20.5% after -5.1%). The decrease was more restrained in administrative and support services activities (–1.8% after +0.1%), real estate activities (–3.1% after -0.8%), transportation and storage (–1.3% after +0.9%, this despite an acceleration in air transport: +31.2% after +4.5%), and information-communication (-0.7% after +5.2%). Output was steady in professional, scientific and technical activities (0.0% after +6.3%).
Output in services was still at a lower level (−8.0%) than in February 2020, with notably a collapse in accommodation and food services activities (–60.4%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (–57.3%). The decline was more moderate in administrative and support services activities (–5.7%), transportation and storage (–5.4%), and real estate activities (–6.9%). On the other hand, information-communication (+9.2%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+5.3%) sectors were up compared to February 2020.
