In May 2021, agricultural producer prices went up by 7.4% year on year. Excluding fruit and vegetables, they rose by 3.3% over one month (after +0.4%) and by 7.9% year on year (after +4.7%).

Rebound of cereal prices over one month

In May 2021, cereal prices bounced back (+4.0% after –1.5%), in the wake of the large acceleration in maize prices (+15.4% after +2.0%), due in particular to dynamic demand and limited supply. Soft wheat prices rose slightly (+0.2% after –2.1%) in anticipation of a large world demand and better than expected harvests in Europe and North America. Year on year, cereal prices accelerated (+25.6% after +19.5%).

Oilseed prices recovered significantly (+7.1% after –5.8%), notably as a result of the concerns about French production following the spring frost period. The rebound was particularly important for sunflower prices (+10.7% after –19.1%) and more moderate for rapeseed prices (+6.8% after –2.8%). Soybean prices slowed down again (+0.4% after +1.2% and +3.7%). Oilseed prices remained on a very large rise year on year (+46.7% after +38.4%).

Acceleration in fresh fruit prices and decrease in fresh vegetable prices year on year

Year on year, fresh fruit prices sped up in May 2021 (+14.5% after +12.7%). Cherry prices were particularly dynamic (+34.2% year on year). Apple prices (+19.0% after +14.2%) and strawberry prices (+5.7% after +10.1%) rose again. Fresh vegetable prices fell year on year, but more moderately than in April (–3.3% after –18.8%), due to the continued fall at a slower pace in endive prices (–26.1% after –47.7%), cucumber prices (–15.3% after –25.3%) and tomato prices (–10.6% after –35.7%). The fall was smaller for salad prices (–2.0% after –5.5%).

More about French agricultural price indices

The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. As a result their variations can be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.

The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPAMPA) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonaly adjusted.

The methodology of IPPAP is available on the Insee web site: https://www.insee.fr/en/metadonnees/source/indicateur/p1657/description
