In May 2021, a rise in large-scale food retailing turnover

In May 2021, the turnover in large-scale food retailing picked up (+1.3%), following a fall in April (−0,8%). Admittedly, the turnover stalled in food products (−0.1% after +0.9%), while it kept decreasing in non-food products, albeit slightly (−0.2% after −1.2%). But the sales of automotive fuel recovered sharply: the related turnover increased by 18.8% (after −14.8%) due to the end of the lockdown and the lifting of restrictions on movements from 3 May.

The turnover bounced back in supermarkets (+1.9% after −0.9%) and hypermarkets (+0.6% after −0.4%).

Increase in turnover over a year (+6.6%)

With a base effect due to the start of the first lockdown in March 2020, the turnover of the past three months (March to May 2021) in large-scale food retailing increased (+6.6%) when compared with the same period one year earlier. The sales decreased slightly in food products (−0.2%), while they grew in non-food products (+3.4%) and expanded considerably in automotive fuel (+76.6%).

Year on year, sales from March to May grew both in supermarkets (+2.7%) and hypermarkets (+9.5%), the latter had been more impacted than supermarkets by the first lockdown.
