Output in services increased markedly in March 2021 (+3.4%) Index of services production - March 2021
In March 2021, output in services sped up (+3.4% after +1.2% in February). Compared with February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), it remained however sharply down (−5.9%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of services production change is based mostly on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In March 2021, output in services sped up (+3.4% after +1.2% in February). Compared with February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), it remained however sharply down (−5.9%).
In March 2021, output went up in a majority of sectors
In March 2021, output bounced back sharply in professional, scientific and technical activities (+7.7% after –0.4%), in information-communication (+4.6% after –1.6%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (+14.2% after –7.6%). Output rose again but more moderately in administrative and support services activities (+0.4% after +6.6%), and accommodation and food services activities (+0.6% after +1.9%). Conversely, output fell in real estate activities (–0.7% after +1.4%) and transportation and storage (–0.4% after +4.2%). In the latter sector, the significant drop in warehousing and support for transportation (–12.7%) followed a strong increase in February (+ 11.5%).
Output in services was at a lower level (−5.9%) than in February 2020, with a collapse in accommodation and food services activities (−55.8%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (–43.7%). The decline was more moderate in transportation and storage (−5.6%), administrative and support services activities (–3.8%), and real estate activities (−3.9%). Information-communication (+9.6%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+6.0%), on the other hand, were up compared to February 2020.
