In April 2021, a fall in large-scale food retailing turnover

In April 2021, the turnover in large-scale food retailing decreased (−1.3% after +2.1% in March), in the context of more stringent health restrictions. The turnover slowed down in food products (+0.8% after +1.3%), while it kept decreasing in non-food products (−1.9% after −0.2%), linked with the closure of some "non-essential" sections. Sales of automotive fuel fell drastically in April (−14.1% after +3.2%) due to restricted movements.

The turnover dwindled in supermarkets (−1.4% after +2.2%) and hypermarkets (−0.5% after +1.2%).

Increase in turnover over a year (+5.3%)

With a base effect due to the start of the first lockdown in March 2020, the turnover of the past three months (February to April 2021) in large-scale food retailing increased (+5.3%) when compared with that of the same period one year earlier. Over that period, sales grew in food products (+0.9%) and non-food products (+7.2%). Sales grew sharply in automotive fuel (+29.5%).

Year on year, sales from February to April rose both in supermarkets (+2.4%) and hypermarkets (+6.6%), the latter had been more impacted than supermarkets by the first lockdown.
