Manufacturing industry turnover fell back in February 2021 (–4.9%) Turnover in industry and construction - February 2021
In February 2021, turnover fell back in the manufacturing industry (−4.9% after +3.3) as in industry as a whole (−2.2% after +2.6%).
Export turnover declined in February (−16.0% after +14.3%).
Compared to February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), turnover fell sharply, in the manufacturing industry (−7.4%) as in industry as a whole (−4.2%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In February, turnover in the manufacturing industry decreased very strongly in the manufacture of transport equipment
In February, turnover decreased very sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (−29.7% after +15.9%); the decline was particulary sharp in the “other transport equipment“ sector (−49.6% after +30.8%). The turnover decreased in “other manufacturing” (−0.5% after +0.7%), mainly in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−10.4% after +13.9%). The turnover was virtually stable in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.1% after +1.5%). It increased moderately in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.2% after +0.1%) and more sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+10.2% after +8.4%).
Compared to February 2020, turnover dropped very sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (−36.1%) and also in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−21.6%). It was virtually stable in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.1%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.1%), increased slightly in “other manufacturing” (+0.9%) and was in sharp rise in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+11.1%).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry decreased over one year (–5.3%)
The industry turnover over the last three months decreased compared to that of the same three months of the previous year (−5.3% for the manufacturing industry, –4.1% for the whole industry). The drop was particularly pronounced in the manufacture of transport equipment (−20.5%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−29.3%). The drop was more moderate in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.0%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−1.3%). Over this same period, turnover was in slight rise in “other manufacturing” (+0.6%) and increased moderately in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+1.7%).
Revisions
The percentage change of the turnover index in January 2021 in the manufacturing industry has been revised upwards at +3.3% instead of +2.9%; it has been reestimated at +2.6% instead of +2.8% in industry as a whole, compared to the previous publication.
