In December 2020, household consumption expenditure on goods rebounded sharply (+23 %

Household consumption expenditure on goods rebounded strongly in December (+23% in volume*) after the sharp fall in November (–18%) due to the second lockdown. They thus exceeded their December 2019 level (+3.7%). This rebound was mainly driven by manufactured goods consumption (+9.8% compared to December 2019) and to a lesser extent by food consumption (+0.7%), while energy expenditure was down (–5.1%).
Over the fourth quarter of 2020, household consumption on goods was down (–3.1% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019), a drop of 4.2% compared to the third quarter of 2020.

Manufactured goods: +9.8% compared to December 2019
In December, manufactured goods consumption recovered very strongly (+9.8% year-on-year), due to durable goods purchases (+6.9%) but also to spending on clothing and textiles (+17.8%) and other manufactured goods (+9.6%). This very strong rebound can be explained in particular by the reopening of all shops on November 28, and the postponement of Black Friday to December.
Over the fourth quarter, purchases of manufactured goods were down by 8.5% compared to the third quarter of 2020.
Durables: +6.9% compared to December 2019
In December, spending on durable goods recovered sharply and was 6.9% above its December 2019 level. It was mainly driven by the very strong increase in household equipment purchases (+38.3% year-on-year), particularly household appliances and electronic products. This was partly due to the postponement of Black Friday to December. In contrast, purchases of transport equipment remained sharply down (–10.0% compared with December 2019).
Over the fourth quarter, purchases of durable goods fell sharply, by 7.4% compared to the third quarter of 2020.
Textile-clothing: +17.8% compared to December 2019
In December, spending on clothing and textiles rebounded very strongly (+17.8% compared to December 2019).
Nevertheless, over the quarter as a whole, consumption of clothing and textiles fell sharply (–15.2% compared to the third quarter of 2020).
Other engineered goods: +9.6% compared to December 2019
In December, consumption of "other manufactured goods" rebounded (+9.6% compared to December 2019), due to a strong upturn in sales of perfume, sports equipment and games and toys.
Over the fourth quarter, spending on "other manufactured goods" was down by 6.0% compared to the third quarter of 2020.

In December, food consumption has been recovering after a sharp fall in November. Year-on-year, expenditure rose by 0.7% in December (after –2.9% in November). Expenditures increased for meat and processed products. On the other hand, tobacco consumption remained in decline.
Over the fourth quarter, food consumption increased by 1.1% compared to the third quarter of 2020.

Energy: –5.1% compared to December 2019
In December, energy consumption remained down (–5.1%) compared to December 2019. Fuel consumption (mainly diesel and gasoline) was 12.6% lower than its December 2019 level, due to travel restrictions. In contrast, gas and electricity consumption was recovering (+1.8% year-on-year, after –7.1% in November).
Over the fourth quarter, energy spending was down by 3.9% compared to the third quarter of 2020.

The evolution of November was revised upwards
The evolution of household consumption expenditure on goods for November 2020 was revised upwards, to –18.0% compared to October, instead of –18.9%. Since the previous publication, new information has been integrated and the seasonal adjustment coefficients have been updated, excluding March to December from the estimation period.

Scope and definition - Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2010, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1) Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, metals, plastic, rubber, chemicals, minerals, furniture, hardware, drugs (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewelry, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
