In November 2020, services output plummeted (−5.3%) Index of services production - November 2020
In November 2020 output in services declined markedly (−5.3% after −0.4% in October), some sectors were affected by the second lockdown. Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−10.1%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of services production change is based mostly on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In November 2020 output in services declined markedly (−5.3% after −0.4% in October), some sectors were affected by the second lockdown. Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−10.1%).
In November 2020, output was down for most of sectors
In November 2020, due to the lockdown, output slumped in accommodation and food services activities (−46.0% after −11.7%). Nevertheless, compared to April, output remained at a higher level probably due to the development of alternative sales methods. Output was down sharply in real estate activities (–6.7% after –12.4%), arts, entertainment and recreation (−10.6% after −14.0%), and other service activities (–33.3% after –2.7%) which include for example hairdressing activities. It fell back in professional, scientific and technical activities (–1.8% after +3.8%), especially in scientific research and development (−9.0% after +3.7%). The decline was more moderate in transportation and storage (−0.5% after +2.3%) despite a sharp fall in air transport (−34.5% after +8.2%). By contrast output continued to rise in administrative and support service activities (+1.0% after +2.3%) and in information and communication (+0.3% after +3.7%).
Output in services stood at a lower level (−10.1%) than in February, notably in accommodation and food service activities (−59.4%), arts, entertainment and recreation (−39.7%), other service activities (–37.0%), real estate activities (−11.3%), transportation and storage (−7.1%), with in particular for this sector a collapse in air transport (−71.4%). The fall was more moderate in administrative and support service activities (–4.5%). It was up compared to February in information and communication (+2.4%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities (+1.3%).

Output also decreased over a year for all sectors
Services output in the last three months was 8.6% lower than the same period in 2019. Output fell sharply in accommodation and food services activities (−34.9%), in arts, entertainment and recreation (−31.4%), in transportation and storage (−12.6%) and in administrative and support service activities (−7.6%). The fall was less pronounced in real estate activities (−2.2%). Output fell to a much lesser extent in professional, scientific and technical activities (−0.6%) and in information and communication (−0.1%).
Revisions
The month-on-month percentage change in the index of services production in October 2020 has been revised upwards by 0.4 points. Initially published at −0.8%, it is now evaluated at −0.4%.
