2020- n° 335In October 2020, services output fell (−0.8%) and remained below its February level
(−5.4%) Index of services production - October 2020
In October 2020 output in services went down (−0.8% after +2.8% in September). Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−5.4%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of services production change is based mostly on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In October 2020 output in services went down (−0.8% after +2.8% in September). Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−5.4%).
In October 2020, contrasted evolutions depending on the sectors
In October 2020, output fell back in real estate activities (−12.5% after +12.7% in September), and continued to decline in accommodation and food services activities. In this sector, partial curfew and second lockdown (from October 30 onwards) had probably a bigger impact on food and beverage service activities (–12.8%) than on accommodation (–7.3%). For the same reasons, output tumbled in arts, entertainment and recreation (−13.9% after −0.8%). By contrast output rose in professional, scientific and technical activities (+2.4% after +6.7%), in information and communication (+3.7% after −4.3%), administrative and support service activities (+2.1% after +6.3%) and transportation and storage (+2,3% after +1.5%).
Compared to February, output in services was still down sharply (−5.4%), notably in accommodation and food service activities (−24.7%), especially for accommodation activities (−38.1%), and in arts, entertainment and recreation (−32.2%). Output stood down also in administrative and support service activities (−6.2%), transportation and storage (−6.6%), notably in air transport (−56.0%), and in real estate activities (−4.8%). It was up compared to February in professional, scientific and technical activities (+2.4%) and in information and communication (+1.9%).
