In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

In October 2020, the volume of sales in trade recovered

In October, the volume of sales in retail trade bounced back (+2.4% after −3.6% in September). Each sector contributed to this rebound: non-specialised stores (+3.9% after −2.7% in September), specialised stores (+1.2% after −4.4%) and retail trade not in stores (+3.8% after −2.2%). This upward trend was observed most notably among specialised stores, in which the strongest growth concerned information and communication equipment (+4.0% after −11.1% in September), retail sale of other household equipment (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +3.0% after −3.1%) and food, beverages and tobacco (+1.4% after −2.0%). The sales volume in automotive fuel kept falling (−0.8% after −4.0% in September).

The volume of sales in wholesale trade bounced back slightly in October (+0.2% after −0.9%). This rebound was particularly sharp in the wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (+5.3% after −3.8%) and other machinery, equipment and supplies (+5.2% after −0.8%). On the contrary, the sales volume collapsed in non specialised wholesale trade (−10.6% after +1.6% in September).

The volume of sales in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles kept falling in October (−0.8% after −3.8% in September). Its level still remained significantly higher than before the first lockdown (+6.8% compared to February).

Forecast

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles should fall drastically in November 2020 (−18.0%), due to the second lockdown. From September to November, it should decrease by 2.5% compared to the same period one year earlier.
