2020- n° 333Manufacturing industry turnover was virtually stable in October 2020 (+0.2%) Turnover in industry and construction - October 2020
In October 2020, turnover was almost stable in the manufacturing industry (+0.2% after +1.9%) as in the whole industry (−0.2% after +2.0%).
Export turnover declined in October (−2.5% after +2.2%).
Compared to February (last month before the first lockdown), turnover remained in decline, in the manufacturing industry (−8.1%) as in industry as a whole (−6.6%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In October 2020, turnover increased significantly in the manufacture of transport equipment and more in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products
In October, turnover slowed down, but continued to increase in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.8% after +12.7%) and rebounded in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+6.7% after −5.8%). It was virtually stable in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.2% after −1.1%). However turnover fell back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.6% after +0.3%) and also in “other manufacturing” (−1.1% after +0.8%).
Compared to February, turnover in industry declined in almost all sectors. It fell strongly in the manufacture of transport equipment (−19.8%), especially in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−34.1%). Turnover declined also in “other manufacturing” (−4.5%), in particular in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−9.8%), only progressing in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (+1.3%). Turnover decreased strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−33.9%). It declined more moderately in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−3.6%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.5%). Compared to February, turnover increased only in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+0.6%).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry fell sharply over one year (-10.0%)
The industry turnover over the last three months fell sharply compared to that of the same three months of the previous year (−10.0% for the manufacturing industry, –8.4% for the whole industry). The fall was particularly pronounced in the manufacture of transport equipment (−26.0%), in “other manufacturing” (−5.5%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−37.6%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−5.9%). The downturn was more moderate in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−1.0%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.7%).
At a finer level, within the manufacturing industry, the drop in turnover was particularly strong in the manufacture of other transport equipment over one year (−40.3%).
