In July 2020, the price of oil increase less than in June Prices of oil and raw material imports - July 2020

In July 2020, the prices of oil in euros eased (+5.6% after +30.2%). The prices in euros of imported commodities (excluding energy) recovered slightly (+0,4% after −2.5%), in particular the prices of industrial raw materials ( +2.8% after +3.5%). However, the prices of raw food materials decreased again (−2,0% after −7.9%).

Oil prices increased again

In July 2020, the prices of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in euros increased less than in June (+5.6% after +30.2%) to an average of €43 per barrel. In dollars, the slowdown was more marked (+7,5% after +36.8%), because the euro appreciated a bit in June.

Industrial commodity prices increased less than in June

In July 2020, the prices of industrial raw materials eased a bit (+2.8% after +3.5%) like those of mineral materials (+3.6% after +4.8%). The price of non ferrous metals accelerated (+4.8% after +3.7%), those of precious metals recovered (+6.6% after −0.4%) and those of ferrous metals eased (+1.8% after +7.1%). The prices of agricultural raw materials decreased less than in June (−1.5% after −2.7%) as those of sawn softwood (−1.8% after −3.1%), pulp (−2.4% after −3.3%), and tropical wood (−0.5% after −1.2%). The price of natural textile fibres fell back (−0.4% after −3.3%), the price of natural rubber increased the same magnitude than in June (+1.2% after +1.3%) and those of recovered (+0.3% after −4.0%).

Food commodity prices decreased again

In euros, the prices of imported raw food materials decreased again (−2.0% after −7.9%) mainly because of those of cereals (−6.5% after −1.8%), meats (−8.3% after −23.8%) and tropical foodstuffs (−0.3% after −6.7%). The prices of seafood products fell back a bit (−0.2% after+0.6%), like the price of sugar (−1.3% after +7.9%). However, the prices of oil seeds and vegetable oils recovered (+1.7% after −2.2%).

Crude oil: from 1986, the price of Brent gradually established as a representative reference price of European supplies.

Petroleum products: prices of petroleum are quotations from the Rotterdam market which supplies European market.

Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw materials prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
