2020- n° 187In May 2020, the turnover recovered in the manufacturing industry (+16.5%) Turnover in industry and construction - May 2020
In May 2020, the turnover recovered in the manufacturing industry (+16.5% after −23.1%) as in industry as a whole (+13.9% after −21.0%).
Export turnover rebounded (+8.8% after −31.4%).
Compared to February (last month before the start of containment), the turnover fell in the manufacturing industry (−25.7%) as in industry as a whole (−22.6%).
With the containment of the population from 17 March to 10 may 2020, companies’ value added tax (VAT) declarations, used for the turnover indices, have been slightly adapted by the Directorate-General for Public Accounting; therefore, the indices of services production published here could be revised a little bit more than usual.
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).
In May 2020, the turnover recovered in all sectors
The turnover in “other manufacturing” recovered (+19.4% after −18.4%) in all subsections, except in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products and pharmaceutical preparations, where the level remained high (−3.3%). In the manufacture of transport equipment, the turnover bounced back (+44.1% after −53.6%), especially in automotive industry after a very low point in april (+121.0% after −67.8%). It bounced back also in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+20.8% after −22.7%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.2% after −9.7%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+10.4% after −44.0%).
Compared to February, the turnover remained very low in the manufacture of “other manufacturing” (−54.6%), in automotive industry (−57.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−53.3%). The fall was also marked in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−28.5%), in "Other manufacturing; repair and installation of machinery and equipment" (−19.3%), in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (−19.2%), in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−22.6%) and in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−24.0%). Compared to February, the decrease was less pronounced in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−11.3%), in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−7.9%), in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−4.8%) and in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−3.5%), due to a very strong rebound in May for the latter.
