Slight drop over a month in food prices in hyper and supermarkets

The prices of food (excluding fresh produces) sold in hyper and supermarkets edged down in June: −0.1% over a month after a stability in the previous month. Year on year, they slowed down to +1.2% after +1.4% in May.

The drop over a month resulted from a downturn in meat and beverages prices and a more marked drop in those of other food products.

The prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets fell back by 0.1%, after +0.3% in the three previous months. Year on year, they were again less dynamic than in the previous month: +3.4%, after +3.9% in May and +4.2% in April.

The prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets edged down by 0.1% over a month, after three months of stability. Year on year, they rose by 0.5%, as in May.

The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) dropped a little more over a month than in May: −0.2% after −0.1%. Year on year, they slowed down, to +0.4% after +0.7% in the previous month.

Fall in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets

In June, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets fell by 0.3% over a month, as in May. Year on year, the drop in the prices of these products was sharply more marked than in the previous month: −1.4%, after −1.0%.

For further information

The indice of the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets is mainly calculated using scanner data (75%), whose collection has not been affected by the lockdown, and for the remaining part, using prices collected by INSEE collectors in physical outlets. The indice of beverage prices in hyper and supermarkets is carried out by 100% using scanner data, whereas that of meat by 30%, that of other food products by 76% and that of cleaning and personal care products by 98%.

The price indice in the other kinds of stores is calculated only with prices collected by collectors in physical outlets.

The price collection carried out by collectors on the field, adjourned since 16 March, has gradually resumed in the end of the month of collection: for the concerned products, INSEE has introduced new collection methods (price collection on line, price collection by phone, increased use of scanner data) but the percentage of imputed prices remained high and the quality of the indices did not allow to publish the indices for the others kinds of stores than hyper and supermarkets.
