Stability over a month in food prices in hyper and supermarkets
The prices of food (excluding fresh produces) sold in hyper and supermarkets were stable in May 2020 after +0.3% in the previous month. Year on year, they slowed down to +1.4% after +1.7% in April.
The stability over a month resulted from an increase in meat prices offset by a drop in those of other food products, while those of beverages were stable.
The prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.3%, the same rate as in April and March. Year on year, they were sharply less dynamic than in April: +3.9% after +4.2%.
The prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets were stable over a month, as in the two previous months. Year on year, the prices of these products slowed down for the fourth consecutive month: +0.5% after +0.8%.
The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) fell back in May by 0.1% after +0.5% in April. Year on year, they slightly slowed down (+0.7% after +0.9%).
Downturn in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets
In May, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets fell back by 0.3% over a month, after +0.2% in April. Year on year, the drop in the prices of these products was a little more marked than in the previous month: −1.0%, after −0.8%.
For further information
The indice of the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets is mainly calculated using scanner data (75%), whose collection has not been affected by the lockdown, and for the remaining part, using prices collected by INSEE collectors in physical outlets. The indice of beverage prices in hyper and supermarkets is carried out by 100% using scanner data, whereas that of meat by 30%, that of other food products by 76% and that of cleaning and personal care products by 98%.
The price indice in the other kinds of stores is calculated only with prices collected by collectors in physical outlets.
The price collection carried out by collectors on the field has been adjourned since 16 March: for the concerned products, INSEE has introduced new collection methods (price collection on line, price collection by phone, increased use of scanner data) but the percentage of imputed prices remained high and the quality of the indices didn’t allow to publish the indices for the others kinds of stores than hyper and supermarkets.
