In March 2020, the turnover in large-scale food retailing increased (+1.8% after +1.3% in February). It rose sharply in food products (+10.9% after +1.8% in February) due to precautionary behaviors in response of home confinement. It was virtually stable in non-food products (−0.1% after −0.6%) and declined sharply in automotive fuel (−34.4% after −1.5%).
Turnover grew strongly in supermarkets in March (+8.2% after +1.5%) whereas it declined in hypermarkets (−1.8% after +0.5%).
Given the lockdown since March 17, response rates for business surveys about March 2020 (collected during April) are lower than usual. Therefore, statistics published in this issue of Informations Rapides could be revised more than usual in the next publication.

Increase over the last three months (+1.8%)
Over the first quarter of 2020, the turnover in large-scale food retailing grew (+1.8%) compared to the the fourth quarter of 2019. Over that period, sales rose strongly in food products (+5.1%), decreased in non-food products (−1.9%) and more sharply in automotive fuel (−11.9%).
Turnover grew in supermarkets (+3.3%) and weakly in hypermarkets (+0.2%).
Increase over a year (+1.9%)
The turnover of the first quarter of 2020 in large-scale food retailing rose (+1.9%) compared to the first quarter of 2019. Over that period, sales grew in food products (+5.1%), decreased in non-food products (−3.9%) and more sharply in automotive fuel (−8.7%).
Year on year, sales rose in supermarkets (+4.4%) whereas they declined slightly in hypermarkets (−0.4%).
