In February 2020, downturn in sales volume in overall trade Sales volume in wholesale and retail trade - February 2020

In February 2020, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−0.7% after +0.8% in January). It dwindled in wholesale trade (−0.8% after +1.2%), kept declining in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−1.6% after −0.2%) and decreased slightly in retail trade (−0.2% after +0.7%). Among retail trade, the sales volume fell back in specialised stores (−1.7% after +0.5%), decreased again in retail trade not in stores (−0.5% after −0.2%) whereas it accelerated in non-specialised stores (+2.1% after +1.1%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight. All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working days adjustments (SA-WDA).

SA-WDA models have been reestimated on a sub-period to adjust indices on the recent past, in order to provide improved fit and better robustness (SA-WDA models were until now estimated on the whole period of indices).

In February 2020, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−0.7% after +0.8% in January). It dwindled in wholesale trade (−0.8% after +1.2%), kept declining in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−1.6% after −0.2%) and decreased slightly in retail trade (−0.2% after +0.7%). Among retail trade, the sales volume fell back in specialised stores (−1.7% after +0.5%), decreased again in retail trade not in stores (−0.5% after −0.2%) whereas it accelerated in non-specialised stores (+2.1% after +1.1%).

The sales volume in overall trade decreased over the last three months

Over the last three months (December 2019 to February 2020), the sales volume in overall trade decreased by 0.3% compared to the previous three months. It decreased both in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−1.3%) and in wholesale trade (−0.2%), whereas it was stable in retail trade. Within retail trade, the sales volume declined in specialised stores (−0.9%) whereas it increased in non-specialised stores (+1.4%) and stabilized in retail trade not in stores.

The sales volume rose by 2.1% over a year

The sales volume in overall trade grew by 2.1% over a year. It increased in all sectors: it rose in wholesale trade (+1.8%), in retail trade (+2.1%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+3.1%). Within retail trade, it grew in specialised stores (+1.9%), in non-specialised stores (+1.7%) and in retail trade not in stores (+5.1%).

Forecast

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should have fallen in March 2020 (−17.4%). It should have decreased by 4.1% year on year (last three months compared to the same three months of previous year).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in January 2020 has been revised downwards, at +0.8% instead of +0.9% initially published.
