Warning

These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The indices published here are based on a limited set of price observations and from estimates of some rates of change for fares which are not yet available. The complete results will be published on 15 May 2020.

Moreover, the health crisis due to the Covid-19 impacts the quality of the data for April 2020: price collection on the field has been adjourned since 16 March, some points of sale were closed and a lot of products are no more available for sale. The prices of more than four tenth of the consumption are therefore imputed due to the health crisis. Additional information is available in “For further information”.

Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 0.4% in April 2020, after +0.7% in the previous month, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This drop in inflation should result from an accentuated fall in energy prices and a sharp slowdown in service prices. Contrariwise, food prices should be sharply more dynamic year on year than in March. Manufactured product prices should drop at the same pace, as in the previous month.

Over one month, consumer prices should increase by 0.1%, as in the previous month. Food prices should rebound sharply, due to a strong rise in fresh food product prices. Services prices should rise barely, after a downturn in the previous month. Contrariwise, energy prices should drop more, in the wake of petroleum product prices. Those of manufactured product prices should slow down sharply and those of tobacco should be stable.

Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should slow down, to +0.5%, after +0.8% in March. Over one month, it should rise by 0.1%, as in the previous month.

For further information

The CPI is calculated using scanner data, prices collected by INSEE collectors in physical outlets and a centralized collection (online collect, administrative data). The price collection carried out by collectors on the field (about 40% in the CPI) has been suspended since 16 March: for the concerned products, alternative data collections were carried out (price collection online, scanner data…). Moreover, a lot of products are no more available for sale (restaurants, shows…). These missing prices due to a lack of collection or an impossibility to purchase the products were imputed in compliance with Eurostat guidelines.
