2020- n° 96In March 2020, the prices of frequently purchased goods rose by 0.1% in hyper and
supermarkets Price Index in large and predominantly-food stores - March 2020
Since March the 16th, INSEE has decided to suspend the price collection carried out by collectors in physical outlets; the indices of this publication were therefore mainly calculated over a period before the lockdown period due to the Covid-19. Contrariwise, scanner data collection, on which the three-quarters of the indice of the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets is based, has not been affected by the lockdown. Additional information is available in “For further information”.
In March 2020, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores rose by 0.1% over a month, as in the previous month. In hyper and supermarkets, the start of the lockdown period due to the Covid-19 did not have an overall effect on the evolution of prices of frequently purchased goods.
Excluding hyper and supermarkets, the prices were stable, after +0.2% in February.
Considering all kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods grew by 0.1%, after +0.2% in the previous month.
Year on year, the prices in hyper and supermarkets slightly slowed down
Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets slowed down for the third consecutive month, but this slowdown was less sustained than in January and February (+1.1% after +1.2% in February, +1.5% in January and +1.8% in December). In large and predominantly food stores, the prices also continued to decelerate: in March, they rose by 1.1% year on year, after +1.2% in February.
In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods were barely more dynamic than in February (+0.9% year on year, after +0.8%). As since July 2019, their increase has been less marked than in hyper and supermarkets.
Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods increased by 1.1% in March, after +1.2% in the previous month.

Over a month, slight rise in food prices in hyper and supermarkets
In March 2020, the prices of food (excluding fresh produces) sold in hyper and supermarkets slightly grew over a month (+0.1%), after two months of stability. Food prices (excluding fresh produces) barely rose after the start of the lockdown. Year on year, they slowed down by 1.5% after +1.6% in February.
This small increase over a month resulted from a rise in meat and other food product prices, while those of beverages were stable.
After a stability in February, the prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.3% in March. Year on year, they were more dynamic than in the previous month: +3.9% after +3.5%.
The prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets were stable over a month, after +0.2% in February and January. The prices of alcoholic beverages, slightly less sold since the beginning of the health crisis, edged down, while those of non-alcoholic beverages, more sold, slightly increased. Year on year, the rise in beverage prices was less marked than in the two previous months: +1.0 after +1.4% in February and +1.9% in January.
The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) increased by 0.1% in March, after a stability in the previous month. Year on year, they slowed down for the fifth consecutive month (+0.7% after +0.8% in February).
Downturn in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets
In March, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets fell back by 0.3% over a month, after a 0.3% increase in February. Larger decreases of cleaning product price were observed after the start of the lockdown. Year on year, the decrease in the prices of these products was barely more pronounced than in the previous month: −1.0%, after −0.9%.
For further information
The indice of the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets is mainly calculated using scanner data (75%), whose collection has not been affected by the lockdown, and for the remaining part, using prices collected by INSEE collectors in physical outlets. The indice of beverage prices in hyper and supermarkets is carried out by 100% using scanner data, whereas that of meat by 30%, that of other food products by 76% and that of cleaning and personal care products by 98%.
The price indice in the other kinds of stores is calculated only with prices collected by collectors in physical outlets.
The price collection carried out by collectors on the field has been suspended since 16 March: for the concerned products, the changes in price non collected at the end of March were imputed from the price changes observed at the beginning of the month. The indices in hyper and supermarkets and in the other kinds of stores are not representative of the same period of time; their comparison must be realized with caution.
