In Q4 2019, the producer costs for construction decreased (–0.3% after a stability in the previous quarter). The decrease was mainly due to the drop of costs in civil engineering (–1.5% after –0.8%); costs in building construction decreased slightly (–0.2% after +0.2%) while those in specialised construction works were virtually stable (–0.1% after +0.2%).

Over a year, the producer costs for construction slowed down (+0.8% after +1.3% in the third quarter). They slowed down in specialised construction works (+1.3% after +1.5%) and in building construction (+1.2% after +1.5%). They fell back in civil engineering (–1.6% after +0.5%).

Labour costs in construction fell back

In Q4 2019, the labour costs in construction fell back (–0.7% after +1.4%). Over a year, it slowed down (+2.0% after +2.7%).

Revision

In Q3 2019, the variation in producer costs in construction has been revised: it was stable versus –0.1% as published in December 2019.

For further information

Monthly production cost indices are released every three months.

These indices aggregate the cost indices of six factors of production, four of which are commented here (equipment, labour, energy and materials) and account for more than 8/9 in the calculation of the producer costs in construction.

These indices are subject to revision. They are primarily used for national accounts and macroeconomics analyses.

Next issue: end of June 2020

Monthly production cost indices are released every three months.

These indices aggregate the cost indices of six factors of production, four of which are commented here (equipment, labour, energy and materials) and account for more than 8/9 in the calculation of the producer costs in construction.

These indices are subject to revision. They are primarily used for national accounts and macroeconomics analyses.

Next issue: end of June 2020
