Producer prices in French industry: stability in January 2020
In January 2020, producer prices in industry stabilized (after +0.1% in December 2019), as well as for the French market (–0.1% after +0.1%) and for foreign markets (stability after +0.2%). Year on year, they slowed down (+0.3% after +0.7%).
FRENCH MARKET: –0.1%
French producer prices in industry for the French market remained virtually stable in January 2020 (–0.1% after +0.1%). The slight backlash in manufactured product prices (–0.2% after +0.3%) was offset by the rebound in those of mining and quarrying products, energy and water. Year on year, French producer prices in industry for the French market slowed down in January 2020 (+0.2% after +0.6%).
Rebound in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In January 2020, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water recovered slightly (+0.4% after –0.7%), driven up by those of waste collection, treatment and recovery services (+2.3% after +0.4%). Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning producer prices stabilized (+0.1% after –1.0%): those of electricity recovered (+0.7% after –1.7%), especially on the wholesale market, whereas those of gas declined again (–3.2% after –1.1%), following a fall in regulated rates. Year on year, the fall in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water strengthened in January 2020 (–1.2% after –0.4%).
Backlash in prices of refined petroleum products
In the wake of oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products fell back in January 2020 (–1.5% after +2.2%). Year on year, they slowed down (+7.7% after +9.4%).

Backlash in food and beverage prices
In January 2020, food and beverage prices fell back for the first time since March 2019 (–0.3% after +0.4%). The decrease is mainly due to those of prices of meat and meat products (–2.0% after +1.1%), which remained dynamic over one year (+7.9% after +8.6%), in the continuing context of the swine fever crisis. Year on year, food and beverage prices grew by 1.0% in January 2020 (after +1.1%).
Virtual stability in prices of “other industrial products”
In January 2020, the prices of “other industrial products” remained stable (–0.1% after a stability in December). Chemical product prices folded (–0.8% after +0.2%). On the contrary, those of repair and installation services of machinery and equipment rose anew (+0.8% after three months of stability). Year on year, the prices of “other industrial products” kept decreasing since July 2019 (–0.8% after –0.6%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: stability in January 2020
In January 2020, the producer prices of French industrial products on foreign markets stabilized (after +0.2%), especially those of manufactured products (+0.1% after +0.3%).
Transport equipment export prices grew by 0.3% (after +0.7%), driven up by those of air and spacecraft and related machinery. Export prices of electrical, electronic, computer and machinery equipments recovered (+0.4% after –0.2%).
On the contrary, export prices of refined petroleum products fell back (–2.1% after +1.1%), in the wake of oil prices, but remained dynamic over one year (+9.2% after +12.1%).
Export prices of food products and beverages stabilized (+0.1% after +0.2%), such as those of “other industrial products” (–0.1% after +0.1%).
Year on year, the producer prices of French industrial products on foreign markets slowed down (+0.5% after +1.1%).

Import price indices of industrial products: –0.5%
In January 2020, the import prices of industrial products folded (–0.5% after +0.3%), driven down by import prices of hydrocarbons and those of manufactured products (–0.2% after +0.1%).
Import prices for coke and refined petroleum products fell back over one month (–4.9% after +2.7%) and slowed down sharply over one year (+4.7% after +11.4%).
The import prices of “other industrial products” stabilized (+0.1% after –0.3%).
On the contrary, import prices of electrical, electronic, computer and machinery equipments grew slightly (+0.2% after a stability), such as those of food products, beverages and tobacco (+0.2% after +0.3%).
Year on year, import prices of industrial products slowed down (+0.3% after +0.9%).
