In December 2019, the turnover fell back in the manufacturing industry (−1.0%) after the slight rise in November (+0.3%). It also went down in industry as a whole (−0.8% after +0.9%).
Export turnover declined again in December (−2.0% after −1.5%).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall evolution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).

Decrease over the last three months
Over the last three months (October to December), the turnover declined in the manufacturing industry (−1.2%) as in industry as a whole (−1.0%), compared to the previous three months. Within manufacturing, the turnover fell strongly in the manufacture of transport equipment (−3.3%). It also went down in “other manufacturing” (−0.6%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−5.3%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−0.9%). It went up slightly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.2%).

Slight decrease compared to the previous year (−0.2%)
The turnover over the last three months decreased by −0.2% compared to the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry as well as in industry as a whole. Over the same period, the turnover slumped in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−12.2%) and also declined in “other manufacturing” (−1.2%). It fell slighly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−0.2%) and was virtually stable in the manufacture of transport equipment (−0.1%). It grew in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.9%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.8%).

In December, further decline in “other manufacturing” (−1.5%)
In December, the turnover in “other manufacturing” fell again (−1.5% after −0.3%). It declined sharply in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−3.9% after −1.5%) and fell back in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (−2.9% after +0.7%) as in the manufacture of wood and paper products; printing and reproduction of recorded media (−2.8% after 0.0%). It also declined in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products and other non−metallic mineral products (−1.0% after −0.2%) and in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−2.1% after −0.7%). Conversely, the turnover grew in other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+1.1% after 0.0%) and rebounded sharply in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+3.2% after −0.9%).
Export sales decreased again in “other manufacturing” in December (−1.6% after −0.9%).
In December, sharp decline in transport equipment (−2.4%)
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment declined sharply in December (−2.4% after +0.7%). It fell back strongly in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−5.8% after +3.2%) and rebounded sharply in the manufacture of motor vehicles (+2.2% after −2.5%).
Export sales of transport equipment went down sharply (−4.2% after −5.1% in November).
Slight decrease in machinery and equipment goods (−0.2%)
The turnover in machinery and equipment goods decreased slightly in December (−0.2% after −0.1% in November). It declined in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−2.2% after +1.7%) while it bounced back in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+1.3% after −3.5%) and in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (+1.7% after −0.2%).
Exports sales in machinery and equipment goods went down in December (−3.0% after +1.4%).
Virtual stability in food products and beverages (+0.1%)
The turnover in the manufacture of food products and beverages was virtually stable in December (+0.1% after +0.5% ). Export sales were stable (after −0.6% in November).
Further increase in coke and refined petroleum products (+1.9%))
The turnover in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products rose again in December (+1.9% after +5.3% in December).
