In December 2019, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−0.8%) after a slight increase in November (+0.2%). It kept decreasing in wholesale trade (−0.7% after −0.6%) and dwindled in retail trade (−1.1% after +1.1%) and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.4% after +1.1%).

In December 2019, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−0.8%) after a slight increase in November (+0.2%). It kept decreasing in wholesale trade (−0.7% after −0.6%) and dwindled in retail trade (−1.1% after +1.1%) and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.4% after +1.1%).

The sales volume in overall trade was stable over the fourth quarter

Over the fourth quarter 2019, the sales volume in overall trade was stable compared to the third quarter 2019. It grew by 0.4% in retail trade. By contrast, it decreased by 0.2% both in wholesale trade and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. Among retail trade, it rose in specialised stores (+1.2%) whereas it decreased in retail trade not in stores (−1.7%) and in non-specialised stores (−0.3%).

The sales volume rose by 2.6% over a year

The sales volume in overall trade grew by 2.6% over a year. It increased in all sectors: it rose in wholesale trade (+1.9%), in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+5.9%) and in retail trade (+2.4%). Among retail trade, it grew in specialised stores (+4.1%) and in retail trade not in stores (+5.2%) whereas it declined in non-specialised stores (−0.8%).

In December, further decrease in wholesale trade

In December 2019, the sales volume in wholesale trade kept decreasing (−0.7% after −0.6% in November). It dwindled in other specialised wholesale (−2.7%) and for wholesaler on a fee or contract basis (−1.2%) after a virtual stability (+0.1% and −0.1%, respectively). Sales volume kept decreasing in information and communication equipment (−2.5% after −2.6%) and in food, beverages and tobacco (−0.2% after −0.4%) whereas it bounced back sharply in agricultural, raw materials and live animals (+2.8% after −4.5%) and kept rising in non specialised wholesale trade (+0.6% after +0.3%).

In December, downturn in retail trade

In December 2019, the sales volume in retail trade fell back (−1.1% after +1.1% in November). It dwindled in specialised stores (−1.6% after +1.6%) and in non-specialised stores (−0.6% after +0.4%), and rose again in retail trade not in stores (+0.4% after +1.2%). Among specialised stores, the sales volume fell back in sale of other goods (−2.1% after+2.1%), in other household equipment (−1.7% after +1.6%) and more strongly in information and communication equipment (−4.0% after +1.3%).

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should be virtually stable in January 2020 (+0.1%). It should grow by 2.7% year on year.

In December, downturn in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In December 2019, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (−0.4% after +1.1% in November). It decreased sharply in motor vehicle parts and accessories (−3.1% after a stability in November). It fell back in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (−0.2% after +0.7%) and rose again in motor vehicles (+0.4% after +1.6%).
