In December 2019, output in services decreased (−0.9% after +0.1% in November).

Services output was near stable over the last three months

Over the last three months (October to December), services output was near stable compared to the previous three months (+0.1%).

It increased in information and communication (+0.9%) and in accommodation and food services activities (+1.5%). It was near stable in business support activities (+0.1%): in this subsection, it grew in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+0.7%) and diminished in administrative and business service activities (−0.6%). Output was stable in real estate activities. However, it went down in household services (−0.8%) and in transportation and storage (−1.5%).

Output grew strongly over a year

In services, output of the last quarter rose sharply over a year (+2.4%).

It went up strongly in information and communication (+4.6%) and more moderately in business support (+1.7%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+1.8%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+1.6%). It also grew in accommodation and food service activities (+4.3%), in household services (+3.1%) and in real estate activities (+1.8%). The output rose slightly in transportation and storage (+0.6%).

In December 2019, strong decrease of the output in business support

In December 2019, output in business support activities decreased strongly (−2.2% after −0.3% in November).

Output went down again in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−3.2% after −0.5% in November): it fell back strongly in scientific research and development (−8.9% after +1.6%), in legal and accounting activities (−1.5% after +2.5%) and in other professional, scientific and technical activities (−3.9% after +2.4%). It decreased again in activities of head offices and management consultancy (−2.7% after −1.7%) and in architecture and engineering activities (−0.6% after −5.3%). The output turned down slightly in advertising and market research (−0.2% after +1.6%) .

Output dwindled in administrative and business support activities (−0.7% after +0.1%), notably in other administrative and business support activities (−2.2% after +0.3%), in employment activities (−0.9% after +1.5%), in activities of security and investigation (−4.2% after +1.9%) and in services to building and landscape activities (−0.8% after +1.6%). However, it bounced back in rental and leasing activities (+1.1% after −2.2%) and in travel agency, tour operator (−2.8% after −2.3%).

Further decrease in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage went down again in December 2019 (−0.4% after −1.2% in November). It fell back sharply in land transport (−3.8% after +1.0%) and in air transport (−4.9% after +4.3%). However, it bounced back in warehousing and support for transportation (+3.0% after −4.3%) and in postal and courier activities (+10.1% after −8.5%) and it accelerated in water transport (+6.3% after +3.1%).

Slight withdrawal in accommodation and food service activities

In December 2019, output in accommodation and food service activities dwindled slightly (−0.2% after +0.7% in November). It turned down in food and beverage service activities (−0.6% after +0.8%) but accelerated in accommodation (+1.3% after +0.6%).

Acceleration in information and communication

Output in information and communication accelerated in December 2019 (+1.1% after +0.5% in November). It increased in computer programming (+0.7% after a stability), in telecommunications (+1.6% after +5.1%), in edition (+2.4% after −5.6%), in information services (+1.6% after a stability) and in motion picture, sound recording, music publishing (+0.9% after a stability). The programming and broadcasting activities was the only subsection where output decreased (−1.1% after +2.4%).

Further rise in household services

In December 2019, output in household services rose again (+1.7% after +2.5% in November). It grew sharply in arts, entertainment and recreation (+2.5% after +3.9%) and bounced back slightly in other personal services production (+0.2% after −0.1%).
