supermarkets Price Index in large and predominantly-food stores - December 2019
From the January 2020 index, published on 20 February 2020, scanner data from supermarkets and hypermarkets will replace price collection in outlets made by INSEE collectors in these forms of sales for manufactured food products and cleaning and personal care products. In addition, the calculation and the scope of the price index in large retailers will be slightly modified. Additional information regarding this change is available in the “For further information” section.
In December 2019, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.2% after +0.1% in the two previous months. In large and predominantly food stores, prices barely accelerated over a month too (+0.2% after +0.1% in November).
Excluding hyper and supermarkets, the prices increased by 0.2% after a stability in the previous month.
Considering all kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods grew a little more quickly than in November: +0.2% after +0.1%.
Year on year, slight acceleration in prices in hyper and supermarkets
Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets rose barely more than in November: +1.8% after +1.7%. In large and predominantly food stores, the prices also grew a little more than in the previous month: +1.7% in December after +1.6% in November.
In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods increased by 1.2% year on year, as in November. For the sixth consecutive month, their increase has been less marked than in hyper and supermarkets.
Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods rose at the same pace as in the previous month: +1.6% year on year.

Over a month, food prices in hyper and supermarkets increased at the same pace as in November
In December 2019, the prices of food (excluding fresh products) sold in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.2% over a month, as in November. Year on year, their rise was a little more sustained than in November (+2.2% after +2.1%).
This rise over a month resulted from the marked increase in meat prices and from those, moderate in beverages and other food products prices.
After a sharp rise in November, the prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets slowed down a little in December (+0.5% after +0.7%). Year on year, their rise was much more dynamic than in the previous month: +4.1% after +3.7% in November.
The prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets increased by 0.1%, as in November. Year on year, their rise was the same as in the previous month (+1.8%).
After a stability in November, the prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) slightly rose in December (+0.1%). Year on year, they slowed down for the second consecutive month (+1.4% after +1.5% in November and +1.7% in October).
Year on year, rebound in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets
In December, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets rebounded (+0.3% after −0.2% in November). Year on year, the decline of these products was hardly more marked than in November: −0.3% after −0.2%.
