In Q3 2019, producer costs for construction were virtually stable (–0.1%) Costs of production indices in construction - third quarter 2019

In Q3 2019, the producer costs for construction were virtually stable (–0.1% after +0.4% in the previous quarter). The stability was mainly due to the low evolution of costs in specialised construction works (+0.1% after +0.2% in the previous quarter); costs in civil engineering decreased (–0.9% after +1.4%) while those in building construction kept increasing slightly (+0.2% as the previous quarter)

Over a year, the producer costs for construction slowed down (+1.3% after +2.2% in the previous quarter). They slowed down in specialised construction works (+1.5% after +2.0%) and in building construction (+1.5% after +1.8%) but also, more markedly, in civil engineering (+0.4% after +3.5%).

Material cost decreased

In Q3 2019, the cost of materials fell back in civil engineering (–2.3% after +3.6%) leading by the decrease in prices of refined petroleum products. It also decreased in specialised works for civil engineering (–0.5%) and in building construction (–0.4%) after a virtual stability in the previous quarter.

Over a year, material cost decreased in civil engineering (–0.9% after +6.1% in the second quarter). It again slowed down in specialised works for civil engineering (+0.6% after +1.1%) and in building construction (+0.7% after +0.9%).

In Q3 2019, the labour costs in construction recovered (+1.2% after –0.9%). Over a year, it sped up (+2.6% after +2.1%).

Revision

In Q2 2019, the variation in producer costs in construction has not been revised: +0.4% as published in September 2019.

For further information

Monthly production cost indices are released every three months.

These indices aggregate the cost indices of six factors of production, four of which are commented here (equipment, labour, energy and materials) and account for more than 8/9 in the calculation of the producer costs in construction.

These indices are subject to revision. They are primarily used for national accounts and macroeconomics analyses.
