In August 2019, the sales volume in overall trade increased (+1.5%) after a stability in July. It bounced back in retail trade (+2.8% after −1.1%), kept rising in wholesale trade (+0.7% after +0.5%) and accelerated in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.5% after +0.5%).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In August 2019, the sales volume in overall trade increased (+1.5%) after a stability in July. It bounced back in retail trade (+2.8% after −1.1%), kept rising in wholesale trade (+0.7% after +0.5%) and accelerated in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.5% after +0.5%).
The sales volume in overall trade increased over the last three months
Over the last three months (June to August 2019), the sales volume in overall trade rose by 0.5% compared to the previous three months. It grew by 2.2% in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles and by 0.7% in retail trade – it rose in specialised stores (+1.0%) and in retail trade not in stores (+1.9%) and was virtually stable in non-specialised stores (−0.1%). It was virtually stable in wholesale trade (+0.1%).

The sales volume rose by 2.7% over a year
The sales volume in overall trade grew by 2.7% over a year. It rose in wholesale trade (+2.5%), in retail trade (+2.6%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+3.7%). Among retail trade, it grew in specialised stores (+3.5%) and in retail trade not in stores (+8.1%) whereas it was virtually stable in non-specialised stores (+0.1%).

In August, sharp rebound in retail trade
In August 2019, the sales volume in retail trade recovered sharply (+2.8% after −1.1% in July). It increased in all sectors: it bounced back in specialised stores (+2.6% after −1.0%) and in non-specialised stores (+3.0% after −1.6%) and rose in retail trade not in stores (+3.1% after −0.1%). Among specialised stores, the sales volume bounced back in retail sale of other goods (+3.9% after −1.7%), in food, beverages and tobacco (+3.4% after −1.3%) and in other household equipment (+1.0% after −0.6%).
According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should decrease in September 2019 (−0.5%). It should grow by 3.1% year on year.
In August, slight rebound in wholesale trade
In August 2019, the sales volume in wholesale trade increased again (+0.7% after +0.5% in July). It accelerated in other machinery, equipment and supplies (+2.0% after +0.6%) and in non specialised wholesale (+5.7% after +1.9%). It rose again in household goods (+0.9% after +0.9%) and recovered in other specialised wholesale (+0.6% after −2.5%). By contrast, the sales volume fell back in information and communication equipment (−2.0% after +4.1%).
In August, acceleration in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles
In August 2019, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles accelerated (+1.5% after +0.5% in July). It recovered in motor vehicle parts and accessories (+3.1% after −0.7%), in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+10.8% after −3.1%) and in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles (+7.9% after −2.0%). By contrast, it was virtually stable in motor vehicles (+0.1% after +1.3%).
