In August 2019, output in services ramped up (+1.3% after +0.2% in July).

Services output increased over the last three months

Over the last three months (June to August), services production rose by 0.5% compared to the previous three months.

It increased sharply in information and communication (+1.1%), in household services (+1.8%) and in accommodation and food services activities (+1.0%). Il went up more moderatly in real estate activities (+0.4%) and in business support activities (+0.2%): in this section, it grew in administrative and business service activities (+0.9%) but decreased in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.3%). Output was near stable in transportation and storage (−0.1%).

Output grew strongly over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose strongly over a year (+3.9%).

It went up strongly in business support (+3.8%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+4.9%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.1%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+4.3%), in accommodation and food service activities (+5.4%), in household services (+5.3%), in real estate activities (+3.6%) and more moderatly in transportation and storage (+1.8%).

In August 2019, sharp rise in business support

In August 2019, output in business support activities increased sharply (+1.9% after +0.1%).

Output recovered in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.4% after −0.9% in July) : it rebounded in the architecture and engineering activities (+9.3% after −5.5%), in scientific research and development (+4.9% after −3.5%), in advertising and market research (+5.2% after −3.9%) and in veterinary activities (+8.4% after −2.3%) and accelerated in legal and accounting activities (+2.1% after +0.9%). By contrast, it dwindled in other professional, scientific and technical activities (−1.7% after +3.0%).

Output decreased slightly in administrative and business support activities (−0.2% after +1.5%). Output dwindled in rental and leasing activities (−1.9% after +3.8%) and in other administrative and business support activities (−1.0% after +0.3%), but went up in services to building and landscape activities (+2.1% after +1.3%), employment activities (+0.7% after −0.2%) and travel agency, tour operator (+5.4% after −4.9%). Activities of security and investigation were near stable (−0.1% after +4.9%).

Sharp acceleration in information and communication

Output in information and communication ramped up sharply in August 2019 (+2.9% after +0.5%). All sub-sections contributed to it, notably computer programming (+3.9% after +1.1%), edition (+2.3% after −0.2%), telecommunications (+1.2% after −1.5%), motion picture, sound recording, music publishing (+3.3% after +4.1%) and information services (+2.0% after +3.4%).

Strong rebound in accommodation and food service activities

In August 2019, output in accommodation and food services recovered (+2.5% after −2.9%), be it in food and beverage service activities (+2.7% after −1.7%) or in accommodation (+1.9% after −7.0%).

Further increase in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage grew again in August 2019 (+1.0% after +0.3%), due to all sub-sections. It bounced back in warehousing and support for transportation (+1.8% after −1.2%), in air transport (+0.8% after −1.8%) and in water transport (+1.6% after −6.2%) and rose again in land transport (+0.5% after +1.5%) and in postal and courier activities (+0.5% after +3.4%).

Strong withdrawal in household services

In August 2019, output in household services turned down strongly (−5.2%), after a strong rise in July (+5.6%). It decreased strongly in arts, entertainment and recreation (−9.4% after +9.5%) whereas it recovered in other personal services production (+3.8% after −1.9%).
