Services output increased over the last three months

Over the last three months (February to April), services production increased by 1.3% compared to the previous three months.

It increased in business support activities (+1.3%): it rose strongly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+1.6%) and more slightly in administrative and business service activities (+0.9%).

It increased also in real estate activities (+2.5%), in accommodation and food services activities (+2.0%), in information and communication (+0.8%), in household services (+1.7%) and in transportation and storage (+0.8%).

Output grew sharply over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+4.7%).

It went up strongly in business support (+5.5%), be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+5.9%) or in administrative and business service activities (+4.9%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+4.2%), in accommodation and food service activities (+5.9%), in transportation and storage (+3.0%), in household services (+5.4%) and in real estate activities (+2.6%).

In April 2019, backlash in household services

In April 2019, output in household services fell back strongly (−5.5%), after a two-month rise (+4.2% in March and +2.2% in February). It fell back sharply in arts, entertainment and recreation (−8.4% after +7.1%) but turned up in other personal services production (+0.3% after −1.3%).

Slight downturn in business support

In April 2019, output in business support activities fell back slightly (−0.2% after +1.3%).

Output dwindled in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.6% after +1.4% in March), especially in scientific research and development (−7.0% after +2.7%) and in advertising and market research (−2.7% after +4.7%). Output kept rising in activities of head offices and management consultancy (+1.4% after +1.5%), in architecture and engineering activities (+1.7% after a stability), in other professional, scientific and technical activities (+4.7% after +2.2%) and in legal and accounting activities (+0.7% after +0.2%).

Output kept accelerating but at a lower pace in administrative and business support activities (+0.2% after +1.2%), especially in other administrative and business support activities (+1.3% after +0.2%), in services to building and landscape activities (+1.0% after +1.3%) and in travel agency, tour operator (+1.7% and +0.7%). Output fell back in employment activities (−0.7% after +2.6%).

Downturn in accommodation and food service activities

In April 2019, output in accommodation and food services fell back (−1.1% after +1.1%). It dwindled sharply in accommodation (−6.1% after +6.2%) whereas it bounced back slightly in food and beverage service activities (+0.3% after −0.4%).

Slight fall in information and communication

Output in information and communication dwindled in April 2019 (−0.4% after +1.1%), especially in telecommunications (−4.4% after +3.5%) and in information services (−3.1% after +1.0%). It kept rising in computer programming (+1.1% after +1.8%) and bounced back in edition (+3.2% after −6.4%).

Rise in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage turned up in April 2019 (+1.1% after −0.4%). It accelerated in land transport (+2.1% after +0.4%) and recovered in warehousing and support for transportation (+0.8% after −0.6%), in postal and courier activities (+2.9% after −3.4%) and in water transport (+2.4% after −9.8%). By contrast, it dwindled sharply in air transport (−5.1% after +2.1%).
