In March 2019, the sales volume in overall trade fell back slightly (−0.3%) after a rise in February (+0.9%). It decreased in all sectors: in wholesale trade (−0.3 % after +0.7%), in retail trade (−0.2% after +0.9%) and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.5% after +1.5%).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In March 2019, the sales volume in overall trade fell back slightly (−0.3%) after a rise in February (+0.9%). It decreased in all sectors: in wholesale trade (−0.3 % after +0.7%), in retail trade (−0.2% after +0.9%) and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.5% after +1.5%).
The sales volume in overall trade increased over the first quarter 2019
Over the first quarter 2019, the sales volume in overall trade rose by 0.8% compared to the last quarter 2018. It increased in all sectors: it grew by 2.7% in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and more moderately in wholesale trade (+0.6%) and in retail trade (+0.3%) – it rose in specialised stores (+1.5%), in trade not in stores (+0.7%), whereas it fell back in non specialised stores (−1.4%).

The sales volume rose by 2.6% over a year
The sales volume in overall trade grew by 2.6% over a year. It rose by 2.9% in wholesale trade and by 2.2% in retail trade – it grew in every subsection: specialised stores (+2.9%), retail trade not in stores (+4.8%) and non-specialised stores (+0.6%). It increased in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.4%).

In March, slight decrease in wholesale trade
In March 2019, the sales volume in wholesale trade decreased slightly (−0.3%) after a rise in February (+0.7%). It kept decreasing in agricultural raw materials and live animals (−5.3% after −2.0%) and for wholesaler on a fee or contract basis (−1.3% after −0.6%). It fell back in other machinery, equipment and supplies (−1.6% after +5.0%). By contrast, sales volume accelerated again in information and communication equipment (+2.5% after +2.0%) and bounced back slightly in food, beverages and tobacco (+0.4% after −0.6%).
Slight downturn in retail trade
In March 2019, the sales volume in retail trade fell back slightly (−0.2% after +0.9% in February). It dwindled in specialised stores (−0.5% after +1.3%), was stable in non-specialised stores and kept increasing in retail trade not in stores (+0.9% after +1.9%). Among specialised stores, the sales volume fell back in retail sale of other goods (−0.8% after +2.1%) and in information and communication equipment (−1.7% after +2.1%), whereas it kept decreasing in automotive fuel (−0.9% after −0.5%).
According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should increase in April 2019 (+0.4%). It should grow by 2.3% year on year.
In March, decrease in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles
In March 2019, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles dwindled (−0.5% after +1.5% in February). It fell back slightly in sale of motor vehicles (−0.4% after +1.8%) and in vehicle parts and accessories (−0.7% after a stability). It declined strongly in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles (−2.9% after +10.7%).
