In February 2019, output in services increased strongly (+1.6%) after a decrease in January (−0.9%).

In February 2019, output in services increased strongly (+1.6%) after a decrease in January (−0.9%).

Services output was stable over the last three months

Over the last three months (December to February), services production was stable compared to the previous three months.

It decreased in business support activities (−0.7%): it declined strongly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−1.7%) but it went up in administrative and business service activities (+0.7%). Output grew sharply in accommodation and food services activities (+1.7%) and in household services (+1.7%). The rise was slighter in transportation and storage (+0.2%) and real estate activities (+0.3%). Output was stable in information and communication.

Output grew sharply over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+3.4%).

It went up strongly in business support (+4.0%), be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+4.3%) or in administrative and business service activities (+3.5%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+4.6%), in accommodation and food service activities (+4.7%), in transportation and storage (+1.7%) and in household services (+2.8%). The output increased slighter in real estate activities (+0.4%).

In February, sharp rebound in business support

In February 2019, output in business support activities rebounded sharply (+2.2% after −2.5%).

Output recovered in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.7% after −4.0% in January), due to a return to a normal level of activity in scientific research and development (+17.1% after −18.5%) and in legal and accounting activities (+1.9 % after −1.1%). Output rose more moderatly in architecture and engineering activities (+0.7% after a stability) and activities of head offices and management consultancy (+0.4% after +0.9%) whereas it sharply decreased in advertising and market research (−4.0% après −0.7%).

Output rebounded slightly in administrative and business support activities (+0.2% after −0.3%). It speeded up in rental and leasing activities (+0,9% after +0.7%) but turned down in other administrative and business support activities (−0.9% after +0.4%). It recovered slightly in services to building and landscape activities (+0.4% après −1.7%). After a decline in January, output was near stable in employment activities.

Sharp rebound in household services

In February, output in household services bounced back strongly (+2.3% after −2.4 %). It recovered in arts, entertainment and recreation (+2.9% après −4.0%) and gathered pace in other personal services production (+1.0% after +0.6%).

Increase in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage went up in February (+1.0% after −0.8%). It bounced back sharply in warehousing and support for transportation (+2.5% after −1.4%) and water transport (+7.0% after −6.0%). It expanded again in air transport (+2.6% after +6.5%) but declined again in land transport (−0.5% after −0.8%).

Ramp up in accommodation and food service activities

In February, output in accommodation and food services grew again, faster than January (+1.4% after +0.6%). It gathered pace in food and beverage service activities (+1.6% après +1.3%) and rebounded in accommodation (+0.6% after −1.6%).

Sligt withdrawal in information and communication

Output in information and communication dwindled slightly in February (−0.3% after +1.3%), notably due to a downturn in computer programming (−1.3% after +1.8%) and in telecommunications (−1.1% after +2.1%). By contrast, it bounced back in edition (+2.5 % after −1.0%) and information services (+2.6% after −1.4%).
