In January 2019, output in services decreased (−0.9%) after a near-stability in December.

Services output diminished over the last three months

Over the last three months (November to January), services production went down by 0.2% compared to the previous three months.

It decreased in business support activities (−0.2%): it declined in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−1.5%) but it increased almost equally in administrative and business service activities (+1.6%). Output dropped sharply in real estate activities (−2.4%) and slightly in transportation and storage (−0.3%). However, it increased in information and communication (+0.7%), in accommodation and food services activities (+0.7%) and in household services (+0.1%).

Output grew sharply over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+3.2%).

It went up strongly in business support (+4.5%), be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+4.9%) or in administrative and business service activities (+4.0%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+5.1%), in accommodation and food service activities (+2.8%), in transportation and storage (+1.5%) and in household services (+0.9%). By contrast it still edged down in real estate activities (−1.3%).

In January, strong decrease in business support

In January 2019, output in business support activities decreased strongly (−2.4% after +0.2%).

Output declined very strongly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−4.3% after +0.4% in December), due to a fall in scientific research and development (−19.6% after +5.0%) and a further decline in legal and accunting activities (−1.4 % after −0.6%). The rebound in activities of head offices and management consultancy (+0.7% après −1.6%) and in other professional, scientific and technical activities (+2.7% après −0.8%) did not offset enough these drops.

Output slightly rose in administrative and business support activities (+0.4% after −0.1%). It increased in rental and leasing activities (+1.3% after +1.7%) and in other administrative and business support activities (+0,4% after −1,0%) but decreased again sharply in travel agency, tour operator (−4.5% après −6.8%). After a decline in December, the output was near stable in employment activities.

Sharp rebound in information and communication

Output in information and communication bounced back in January (+1.3% after −1.0%), due to computer programming (+1.9% after −1.2%), telecommunications (+2.2% after −1.4%), and motion picture, sound recording and music publishing (+5.2% after −3.0%).

Strong downturn in household services

In January, output in household services dwindled strongly (−2.5% after +1.6%). It fell back sharply in arts, entertainment and recreation (−4.0% après +2.4%) and went up slightly in other personal services production (+0.4% after +0.2%).

Withdrawal in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage folded in January (−0.8% after +0.5%). It turned down in warehousing and support for transportation (−1.5% after +3.3%) and continued to decline in land transport (−0.5% après −0.3%) and water transport (−6.4% after −2.5%). On the contrary, it bounced back significantly in air transport (+5.7% after −6.4%).

Slight increase in accommodation and food service activities

In January, output in accommodation and food services grew slightly (+0.2%) after a rise in December (+0.7%). It gathered pace in food and beverage service activities (+0.7% après +0.3%) but fell back in accommodation (−1.7% after +2.4%).
