Producer prices in industry rose slightly in January 2019 (+0.2%) Industrial Producer and Import Price Indices - January 2019

On all markets (French market and foreign markets), producer prices in industry recovered slightly in January (+0.2% after –1.0%). Year on year, they accelerated (+1.6% after +1.2%).

On all markets (French market and foreign markets), producer prices in industry recovered slightly in January (+0.2% after –1.0%). Year on year, they accelerated (+1.6% after +1.2%).

FRENCH MARKET: +0.1%

In January 2019, French producer prices in industry for the French market were virtually stable (+0.1% after –1.1%). The prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water bounced back (+0.5% after –1.7%) while manufactured product prices were stable (after –1.0%). Year on year, French producer prices in industry for the French market grew by 1.4% (after +1.3%).

Recovery in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water

The prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water bounced back in January 2019 (+0.5% after –1.7%). They accelerated strongly year on year (+4.4% after +2.2%). The rise in electricity selling prices, especially on the wholesale market, was partially offset by the fall in gas selling prices, following the decline in regulated tariffs.

Slight decline in food and beverage prices

In January 2019, food and beverage prices fell back (–0.2% after +0.2%). They decreased mainly owing to the fall in prices ofprocessed and preserved meat after the festive season (–2.9% after +1.3%). Year on year, food and beverage prices rose again (+1.1% after +0.9%).

Virtual stability in prices of “other industrial products”

The prices of “other industrial products” were virtually stable in January 2019 (+0.1% after –0.2%). The prices of other non-metallic mineral products jumped (+1.6%), especially those of articles of concrete, cement and plaster (+1.7%) and cement, lime and plaster (+4.0%). Pharmaceutical product prices also increased by 0.8%. Those rises were almost offset by the declines in prices of chemicals (–0.6%), basic metal products (–0.6%) and wearing apparel (–2.2%). Year on year, the prices of “other industrial products” slowed down (+1.2% after +1.6%).

Virtual stability in prices of refined petroleum products

In January 2019, the prices of refined petroleum products were virtually stable (+0.1%), after the two past sharp falls (–13.1% in December and –11.8% in October). The rise in prices of jet fuels was offset by the drop in bitumen prices. Year on year, the prices of refined petroleum products plummeted (–5.8% after –1.4%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: +0.6%

In January 2019, the producer prices of French industrial products on foreign markets rose anew (+0.6% after –0.8%), owing to the rebounds in prices of electricity and manufactured products (+0.2% after –0.7%). Transport equipment export prices rose anew (+0.3% after –0.1% in December). Those of food and beverage recovered (+0.6% after –0.1%), owing mainly to the increase in prices of distilled alcoholic beverages (+3.6%). The prices of “other industrial products” were virtually stable (+0.1%), the rise in chemical prices was offset by the decrease in basic metal prices. Year on year, export prices of industrial products surged (+2.0% after +0.8%).

Import price indices of industrial products: +0.2% in January 2019

In January 2019, the import prices of industrial products recovered sligthly (+0.2% after –1.6%). Manufactured product import prices were virtually stable (+0.1% after –0.9%). In the wake of oil prices, import prices of coke and refined petroleum products bounced back (+6.1% after –12.5%).The import prices of “other industrial products” went down again (–0.3% after –0.7%). The decline was owed to the reduce in prices of chemicals (–0.9%), wearing apparel (–1.6%) and basic metals and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment (–0.6%). Year on year, the import prices of industrial products remained up (+1.0% as in December 2018).
