In October 2018, output in services increased by 0.5% after a stability in September.

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In October 2018, output in services increased by 0.5% after a stability in September.
Services output rose over the last three months
Over the last three months (August to October), services production increased sharply (+2.8%) compared to the previous three months.
The production grew sharply in business support activities (+3.5%), where it went up strongly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+5.1%) and more moderatly in administrative and business service activities (+1.4%). It rose sharply in transportation and storage (+2.6%), information and communication (+2.0%), real estate activities (+2.7%), accommodation and food services activities (+2.2%) and household services (+2.0%).
Output grew sharply over a year
In services, the output of the last three months rose sharply year on year (+5.5%), with an increase in all sectors.
It went up strongly in business support (+6.7%), more strongly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+8.4%) than in administrative and business service activities (+4.2%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+6.5%), transportation and storage (+3.3%), accommodation and food service activities (+4.4%), household services (+4.8%) and real estate activities (+3.3%).

Strong rise in information and communication
Output in information and communication gathered pace in October (+3.3% after +0.2%). All sub-sections increased but the output grew particurlarly in programming and broadcasting activities (+4.2% after −0.3%), publishing activities (+4.5% after −1.9%) and telecommunications (+2.0% after +0.9%).
Rebound in transportation and storage
Output in transportation and storage rebounded in October (+1.1% after −1.1%). It turned up in land transport (+2.5% after −1.1%) and in postal and courier activities (+7.2% after −4.5%), but decreased in other sub-sections.
Slight withdrawal in business support
In October 2018, output in business support activities dwindled slightly (−0.3% after +1.2% in September).
It turned down in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−1.5% after +2.9% in September) especially in scientific research and development (−6.3% after +12.9%) and in activities of head offices and management consultancy (−3.8% after +3.1%). However, it went up in advertising and market research (+12.5% after −3.7%).
In administrative and business support activities, output recovered (+1.4% after −1.3%). This rebound was marked in services to building and landscape activities (+4.5% after −2.6%), in rental and leasing activities (+1.6% after −2.0%) and in employment activities (+1.0% after −1.2%).
Further decline in household services
Output in household sevices went down again in October (−0.6% after −4.4%). The output in arts, entertainment and recreation declined again (−1.7% after −5.7%) whereas it bounced back in other personal services production (+1.6% after −1.7%).
Slight decrease in accommodation and food service activities
In October, output in accommodation and food services diminished slightly (−0.2% after +1.4%). It dwindled in accommodation (−2.1% after +2.9%) and rose again in food and beverage service activities (+0.3% after +0.9%).
Revisions
The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in September 2018 remained unchanged.
