In September 2018, output in services was stable after a strong increase in August (+2.9%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In September 2018, output in services was stable after a strong increase in August (+2.9%).

Services output rose over the last three months

Over the last quarter, services production increased by 1.0% compared to the previous quarter.

The production grew sharply in business support activities (+1.1%), where it went up in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+2.6%) but went down in administrative and business service activities (−0.9%). It rose significantly in transportation and storage (+1.9%), real estate activities (+1.5%) and household services (+1.0%) and more slightly in accommodation and food services activities (+0.2%). It decreased in information and communication (−0.2%).

Output grew sharply over a year

In services, output of the last quarter rose sharply over a year (+4.1%).

It went up strongly in business support (+5.2%), more strongly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+6.9%) than in administrative and business service activities (+2.8%). It grew sharply in information and communication (+4.2%), transportation and storage (+2.5%), household services (+4.4%), accommodation and food service activities (+3.4%) and more moderatly in real estate activities (+1.6%).

Further rise in business support

In September 2018, output in business support activities increased again (+1.4% after +3.2% in August).

It went up sharply in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.1% after 4.0% in August) due to an acceleration in scientific research and development (+13.1% after +10.7%) and in activities of head offices and management consultancy (+3.5% after +1.8%). However, it declined in legal and accounting activities (−2.0% after +3.5%).

In administrative and business support activities, output decreased (−1.1% after +2.1%). This downturn was marked in rental and leasing activities (−1.4% after +1.4%), in employment activities (−1.3% after +2.8%) and in services to building and landscape activities (−2.6% after +3.4%)

Further rise in accommodation and food service activities

In September, output in accommodation and food services rose again (+1.2% after +2.8%). It grew again in food and beverage service activities (+0.9% after +3.9%) and bounced back in accommodation (+2.7% after −1.4%).

Strong withdrawal in household services

Output in household sevices went down sharply in September (−4.2%) after a strong increase (+7.8%) in August. The downturn was more important in arts, entertainment and recreation (−5.5% after +10.0%) than in other personal services production (−1.6% after +3.7%).

Downturn in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage dwindled in September (−0.7% after +1.9%). It fell back in land transport (−0.9% after +2.5%) and in warehousing and support for transportation (−1.2% after +3.9%), but recovered in air transport (+13.6% after −2.2%).

Slight decline in information and communication

Output in information and communication dropped in September (−0.5% after +0.1%), due to motion picture, sound recording and music publishing (−0.7% after +3.5%) and publishing activities (−2.0% after −0.1%). By contrast, the output rebounded in programming and broadcasting activities (+14.0% after −7.3%).

Revisions

The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in August 2018 has been revised upwards by 0.3 points after being rounded. Initially published at +2.6%, it has been stated at +2.9%.
