In August 2018, output in services increased strongly (+2.6%) after a decrease in July (−0.6%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In August 2018, output in services increased strongly (+2.6%) after a decrease in July (−0.6%).
Services output rose over the last three months
Over the three months from June to August, services production increased by 0.5% compared to the previous three months.
The production grew in business support activities (+0.5%), where it went up in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+1.3%) but went down in administrative and business service activities (−0.6%). It rose significantly in transportation and storage (+1.4%), household services (+2.0%) and more moderatly in information and communication (+0.5%). It decreased in accommodation and food services activities (−0.2%) and in real estate activities (−0.8%).
Output grew sharply over a year
In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+3.7%).
It went up strongly in business support (+4.4%), be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+4.8%) or in administrative and business service activities (+3.7%). It grew sharply also in information and communication (+5.5%), household services (+5.1%), accommodation and food service activities (+3.1%) and transportation and storage (+2.0%). It went down only in real estate activities (−0.7%).

Sharp rebound in business support
In August 2018, output in business support activities recovered sharply (+3.2% after −1.1% in July).
It bounced back strongly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+4.0% after −1.1% in July). It increased in all sectors and particularly in scientific research and development (+10.4% after −6.1%), activities of head offices and management consultancy (+2.1% after +1.3%) and legal and accounting activities (+3.0% after +0.1%).
In administrative and business support activities (+2.1% after −1.1%), output also increased in all subsections. Indeed, it bounced back in employment activities (+2.7% after −2.6%) and in services to building and landscape activities (+3.5% after −1.7%) and went up again in rental and leasing activities (+1.4% after +0.9%)
Strong recover in household services
Output in household sevices grew strongly in August (+7.5%) after a marked decrease (−3.2%) in July. The recover was more important in arts, entertainment and recreation (+9.5% after −3.2%) than in other personal services production (+3.7% after −3.2%).
Further increase in transportation and storage
Output in transportation and storage went up again in August (+1.4% after +0.4%). It gathered pace in land transport (+2.6% after +0.5%) and bounced back in warehousing and support for transportation (+2.8% after −0.4%), but fell back in postal and courier activities (−6.8% after +4.6%) and decreased again in air transport (−2.4% after −1.8%).
Upturn in accommodation and food service activities
In August, output in accommodation and food services bounced back (+2.1% after −1.7%). It recovered in food and beverage service activities (+3.2% after −2.0%) while it fell again in accommodation (−1.7% after −0.4%).
Slight decline in information and communication
Output in information and communication dropped slightly in August (−0.2% after +0.6%), due to telecommunications (−1.9% after −1.3%) and programming and broadcasting activities (−8.5% after −2.8%) and despite a rebound in motion picture, sound recording and music publishing (+3.5% after −0.6%).
Revisions
The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in July 2018 has been revised downwards by 0.5 points. Initially published at −0.1%, it has been stated at −0.6%.
