In July 2018, consumer prices increased by 2.3% year on year Consumer price index - provisional results - July 2018

Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should accelerate sharply in July 2018, to +2.3% after +2.0%, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This strong rise in the year-on-year inflation should result essentially from a year-on-year acceleration in energy prices, and to a lesser extent, in service prices. Food and tobacco prices should increase more too. Finally, a lesser drop in manufactured product prices should contribute too to the rise in inflation.

Over one month, consumer prices should edge down to 0.1% in July after a stability in June. This slight drop come from a seasonal fall in slowdown in manufactured product prices due to summer sales, parly offset by a rebound in services prices, essentially in airfares with the beginning of school holidays. Energy prices should slow down: those of petroleum products should fall back, but those of gas should accelerate sharply. Finally, food prices should recover slightly: those in fresh food should drop significantly less than in June and those in other food product should gather pace.

Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should accelerate strongly (+2.6% after +2.3% in June). Over one month, it should edge down to 0.1% after a stability in June.

Warning: These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The indices published here are based on a limited set of price observations and from estimates of some rates of change for fares which are not yet available. The complete results will be published on 14 August 2018.
