In May 2018, output decreased (−0.7%) in services after a strong rise in April (+2.6%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In May 2018, output decreased (−0.7%) in services after a strong rise in April (+2.6%).
Services output rose over the last three months
Over the last three months (March to May), services production increased by 1.0% compared to the previous three months.
It grew in business support activities (+1.1%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+1.5%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+0.9%). It rose sharply in information and communication (+2.2%), in real estate activities (+1.7%) and more slightly in accommodation and food services activities (+0.5%). However, it decreased in transportation and storage (−0.5%) and household services (−0.4%).
Output grew sharply over a year
In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+4.7%), with an increase in all sectors.
It went up strongly in business support (+5.6%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+6.8%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+4.7%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+6.2%), real estate activities (+3.1%), accommodation and food service activities (+4.3%) and household services (+5.1%). It increased more moderately in transportation and storage (+1.5%).

Strong backlash in business support
In May 2018, output in business support activities fell back (−2.0%) after a strong increase in April (+3.6%).
It shrank in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−2.1% after +3.4% in April), particularly in architecture and engineering activities (−2.7% after +3.2%), activities of head offices and management consultancy (−2.4% after +4.2%), legal and accounting activities (−1.0 after +1.6%), and advertising and market research (−6.8% after +7.8%).
Output also fell back in administrative and business support activities (−1.8% after +3.9%), notably in rental and leasing activities (−2.5% after +3.0%), security and investigation (−5.2% after +6.8%) and in services to building and landscape activities (−3.2% after +5.2%).
Downturn in transportation and storage
Output in transportation and storage folded in May (−2.4% after +2.3%), notably in land transport (−4.0% after +1.9%) and warehousing and support for transportation (−1.7% after +4.0%). By contrast, it bounced back in air transport (+3.8% after −5.2%).
Decline in information and communication
Output in information and communication declined in May (−0.8% after +3.0%), due to computer programming (−2.3% after +3.9%) and despite an acceleration in motion picture, sound recording, music publishing (+4.6% after +2.2%).
Virtual stability in accommodation and food service activities
For the third consecutive month, output in accommodation and food services was virtually stable (+0.1% in May). It rebounded in accommodation (+0.8% after −1.0%) whereas it was virtually stable in food and beverage service activities (−0.1% after +0.4%).
Sharp rise in household services
After a stability in April, output in household services rose sharply in May (+2.6%), mainly due to arts, entertainment and recreation (+4.1%). Other personal services production was virtually stable.
Revisions
The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in April 2018 has been revised downwards by 0.1 points. Initially published at +2.7%, it has been stated at +2.6%.
