The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall evolution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In April 2018, the turnover fell back in the manufacturing industry (−0.4%) after a rebound in March (+1.4%). It also went down in industry as a whole (−0.3% after +1.7%).
Export turnover also fell back (−0.4% after +1.3%).
Decrease on the last three months (−0.4%)
The turnover decreased over the last three months in the manufacturing industry (−0.4%). It rose slightly in industry as a whole (+0.2%), as a result of the strong increase in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply, waste management (+3.2%). Within manufacturing, the turnover declined in “other manufacturing” (−0.7%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (−0.8%) and in the machinery and equipment goods (−1.1%). Conversely, it rose in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.4%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+1.2%).
Sharp increase compared to the previous year (+2.8%)
The turnover grew sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+2.8%) as in industry as a whole (+3.4%). The turnover rose strongly in every main sectors of the manufacturing industry − “other manufacturing” (+3.1%), the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+9.0%), the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.9%), the manufacture of transport equipment (+1.6%) and the machinery and equipment sector (+2.2%).

Downturn in “other manufacturing” (−0.7%)
The turnover in “other manufacturing” fell back in April (−0.7% after +1.9% in March). It fell drastically in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−12.8%) after a huge increase in March (+15.1%). It also declined, but less strongly, in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, and other non-metallic mineral products (−0.9% after +0.9%) and in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (−0.9% after +2.3%). Conversely, it rose in the other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+3.3%) and the manufacture of rubber and plastic products (+1.5%).
In April, the export sales in “other manufacturing” fell back sharply (−2.5% after +3.9%).
Strong contraction in transport equipment (−1.5%)
In April, the turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment contracted sharply (−1.5% after +3.5%). It fell back in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−3.3% after +5.5%). It rose again in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, but at a lower rate than in March (+0.5% after +1.4%).
The turnover rose again in export sales (+1.3% after +2.0%).
Decrease in machinery and equipment (−0.7%)
In April, the turnover in machinery and equipment dwindled (−0.7% after +0.3% in March). It fell back in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−2.0% after +3.0%) and decreased again in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−1.3% after −0.7%). Conversely, it recovered in the manufacture. machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+0.4% after −1.1%).
The export sales in machinery and equipment was virtually stable (−0.1% after −0.8%).
Virtual stability in food products and beverages (−0.1%)
The turnover in the manufacture of food products and beverages was again virtually stable in April (−0.1% as in March).
It recovered in export (+0.8% after −0.8%).
Rebound in coke and refined petroleum products (+4.6%)
The turnover in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products recovered sharply in April (+4.6% after −2.1% in March).
Revisions
The variation of the turnover index in March 2018 has been raised by 0.7 points in the manufacturing industry (+1.4% instead of +0.7% in previous publication) due to a revision in raw serie.
It has been raised by 0.6 points in industry as a whole (+1.7% instead of +1.1%).
