In February 2018, services output fell back (−1.6%) after an increase in January (+1.4%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In February 2018, services output fell back (−1.6%) after an increase in January (+1.4%).

Services output increased over the last three months

Over the last three months (December to February), services output rose by 1.2% compared to the previous three months.

It grew in business support (+1.1%), information and communication (+1.6%), transportation and storage (+1.5%), accommodation and food service activities (+1.2%), household services (+1.2%) and real estate activities (+0.9%).

Output grew sharply over a year

In services, the output of the last three months rose sharply year on year (+4.7%), with an increase in all sectors.

Output went up strongly in business support (+5.1%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+6.4%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+4.1%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+7.2%), transportation and storage (+3.4%), accommodation and food service activities (+5.0%) and household services (+4.6%). It increased more slightly in real estate activities (+0.8%).

Downturn in business support

Almost stable in January, output in business support activities fell back in February 2018 (−1.4% after −0.1%).

It dwindled in administrative and business support activities (−2.4% after +0.8%). It decreased in almost all sub-sectors, especially in employment activities (−2.9%) and in rental and leasing activities (−2.6%).

Output continued to decline in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.7% after −0.7%), especially in activities of head offices and management consultancy (−1.6%).

Downturn in transportation and storage

In February 2018, output in transportation and storage fell back (−2.7%) after an increase of 2.2% in January. Output dwindled in land transport (−3.4% after +3.7%) and warehousing and support for transportation (−2.2% after +0.7%). By contrast, it bounced back in postal and courrier activities (+1.9% after −5.0%).

Decrease in household services

After an increase in January, output in household services fell back in February (−4.9% after +5.4%). The decline was more marked in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector (−5.9% after +6.2%) than in “other personal services” (−3.3% after +4.0%).

Downturn in accomodation and food service activities

After an increase in January, output in accommodation and food services fell back in February (−0.6% after +2.0%). It dwindled in food and beverage service activities (−1.3% after +2.5%) and accelerated in accommodation (+1.7% after +0.2%).

Stability in information and communication

Output in information and communication flattened out in February after an increase of 0.6% in January. It grew further in computer programming (+0.7% after +0.1%) and in telecommunications (+1.1% after +0.3%) while it shrank in motion picture, sound recording, music publishing (−5.0% after +6.5%) and in publishing activities (−2.2% after +1.6%).

Revisions

The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in January 2018 has been lowered by 0.2 points. Initially published at +1.6%, it has been stated at +1.4%.
