Demographic report 2024: In 2024, fertility continued to fall, life expectancy stabilised
On 1st 2025, the population of France was up to 68.6 million, 0.25% more than a year earlier.
In 2024, 663,000 babies were born in France. That’s 2.2% fewer than in 2023 and 21.5% fewer than in 2010, the year of the last peak in births. The total fertility rate was 1.62 children per woman in 2024, after 1.66 in 2023. Since the end of the First World War, this indicator had never been so low.
In 2024, 646,000 people died in France, 1.1% more than in 2023. This increase is linked to the arrival of the baby-boom generations at high mortality ages. Life expectancy at birth stabilised at a historically high level in 2024: 85.6 years for women and 80.0 years for men.
Natural balance stood at 17,000 in 2024, the lowest level since the end of the Second World War.
At 247,000 celebrations, the number of marriages increased slightly in 2024. The number of Civil Solidarity Pact (Pacs) decreased in 2023, but remained at the high level of 204,000.
