In 2023, 68.4% of people aged 15 to 64 were in employment as defined by the International Labour Office (ILO). This annual employment rate rose by 0.3 points and stood at its highest level since INSEE measures it (1975). The employment rate for young people slowed significantly after two years of sharp rise, while the rate for older people continued to increase at a steady pace.

The share of fixed-term and temporary employment fell by 0.4 points over the year, returning to its 2021 level of 9.8%.

Teleworking, which has become an established habit among employees since the Covid-19 outbreak, concerned 18.8% of them. However, on average, teleworkers practiced it fewer days a week than in 2022.

In 2023, the share of people in part-time employment (17.4%) stabilised after five years of continuous decline. On the other hand, underemployment continued to fall, to 4.4% of the employed people, 1.4 points below its pre-crisis level.

After seven consecutive years of decline, the unemployment rate stabilised at 7.3% on average in 2023, 3.0 points below its 2015 level. The share of the unemployment halo increased by 0.2 points over the year, returning to its 2021 level (4.6% among people aged 15 to 64).
