Insee PremièreLabour market at a glance in 2022  Youth employment continued to rise sharply, unemployment fell again

Émilie Pénicaud (Insee)

In 2022, 68.1% of people aged 15 to 64 were in employment as defined by the International Labour Office (ILO). The annual employment rate increased by 0.9 points and its highest level since INSEE measures it (1975). Employment continued to increase sharply for young people, especially for work-study contracts, but the increase is less significant than in 2021.

After a strong decline during the Covid-19 outbreak, the share of fixed-term and temporary employment increased for the second consecutive year.

On average, in 2022, almost one in five employees teleworked at least one day a week. More than three quarters of the teleworkers were satisfied with the number of days per week they teleworked.

In 2022, the decline in part-time work became more pronounced, mainly among women. As a result of this decline and the share of people on short-time work which fell back to its 2019 level, underemployment decreased sharply over the year.

For the seventh consecutive year, the unemployment rate fell and reached 7.3% in 2022, 3.0 points lower than in 2015. The share of the unemployment halo also decreased, by 0.2 points compared to 2021, and reached 4.4% among people aged 15 to 64.
