Insee PremièrePopulation decrease would be expected for one third of the regions by 2070

Arthur Cazaubiel, Amel El Guendouz (Insee)

By 2070 the population growth would slow down or the population would continue its decrease in all the regions of metropolitan France. The populations of the southern and western regions where the demographic growth is currently the strongest, would be the only ones to continue growing over the period 2018-2070, due to a positive contribution from net migration. In 2018 the population would have already passed its peak in 38 departments, 14 of which for more than ten years already. By 2070, 91 departments would be in this situation.

The population would age noticeably in all territories. In 64 departments, more than 30% of the inhabitants would be 65 or over in 2070, while none of these departments were in this situation in 2018.

In the overseas regions, the demographic outlook would be contrasted. The population would continue to decline in the Antilles but would sharply increase in Mayotte and French Guiana as well as in Reunion to a lesser extent.
