Insee PremièreThe diversity of origins and the mix of unions progress over the generations

Jérôme Lê (Insee), Patrick Simon (Ined), Baptiste Coulmont (ENS Paris-Saclay)

In 2019-2020, among people living in ordinary household in metropolitan France, 9% were immigrants, 12% were second-generation descendants of immigrants, and among those under age 60, 10% were third-generation descendants of immigrants. The migratory profile of the population reflects past immigration flows with a time lag. Among the second-generation descendants of immigrants, the youngest have mostly origins from Africa, while the oldest are from Europe. Among the current third-generation descendants of immigrants, the share of European origins has been declining over time but remains preponderant.

The diversity of origins is also the result of an increasing mix of unions at each generation: while 27% of immigrants are in a couple with a partner who has no direct migratory background, this is the case for 66% of second-generation descendants. At the third generation, nine out of ten grandchildren of immigrants under 60 have only one or two immigrant grandparents.

Warning: The results initially published in this Insee Première on July 5th, 2022 were updated on February 23th, 2023, following a correction of the survey weights of the Trajectoires et Origines 2 survey (see Documents de travail 2022-02 for more information).

This correction of survey weights led to slight changes in the statistics presented in this publication, without changing its main conclusions. These corrections concern figures 1, 2c and 3.
