Insee PremièreFunctional areas: more 15-29 year-olds and executives in the centres and highly populated areas

David Audenaert, Marie-Pierre de Bellefon, Olivier Pégaz-Blanc (Insee)

Given the lower land pressure in particular, the proportion of houses and surface area of dwellings increase as we move away from central municipalities of functional areas and as the population of the areas decreases. There are a high number of students and working young people in centres, close to university and economic hubs. Couples with children are rarer in central municipalities. There are a greater number of couples over the age 45 without children among the inhabitants of the commuting areas and municipalities outside of functional areas. Executives are present in particularly high numbers in centres and most highly populated areas. Centres are home to both a greater number of wealthy people and a greater number of poor people than other types of municipality. The more populated an area is, the more the proportion of wealthy people increases.
