High income households save more, those with modest income spend more on unavoidable
expenses
In 2017, household gross disposable income (GDI) amounted on average to €45 876 and household consumption to €38 570, the saving rate was 15.9%.
There are significant disparities between the various categories of households. The average GDI by consumption unit of the lowest 20% of households was in 2017 4.3 times lower than that of the wealthiest 20%.
This ratio was 4.8 in 2011. Taking into account social transfers in kind from which households benefit, inequalities are reduced, with a ratio of 1 to 3 between the first fifth and the last fifth of the population.
Savings rates increase with income. The most modest income households devote a greater part of their budget to unavoidable expenses.
